On May 29th, 2018, Genius Patch was awarded its very first grant by the TCC Gives Team. The generous grant of $2,500 was awarded to be used for Genius Patch's 4th Annual Literacy Come to Life Summer Camp. The Summer Camp kicked off its 4th year on July 30th at its long time host site of New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church. With its pledge to provide children with a positive learning experience that makes education fun, exciting and meaningful, Genius Patch provided literacy based educational enrichment for the program.
The summer camp was a great success serving children grades K-6 for 4 days at New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church. Genius Patch provided two education sessions each day of camp. Kindergarten worked from Author Ashlee Chesny’s “The Happy Tummy Hunt”. Alongside the book, the children learned all about fruits and vegetables, healthy eating as reinforced by a fruit and vegetable tasting and learned about the plant life cycle by planting their own vegetable seeds.. They even enjoyed learning their alphabet with some new fruit and vegetable friends from the story. 1st & 2nd graders worked with Ashlee Chesny’s “Brooke and Bre the Engineering Team”. They learned all about engineering with undertones encouraging gender equality in a male dominated field and even got a special visit from two special friends of color working in the engineering field. The visitors were the Superintendent for Canadian National Railroads and a lady Prototype Analyst from Ford Motor Company. The pair taught the group all about locomotive engineering and automotive engineering with interactive parts and age appropriate toy models. The guest even let the children try on their hard hats, which they gifted to Genius Patch for all of our engineering workshops.
The 3-6 grade summer campers had a very unique experience. The children had the opportunity to develop a sequel to Ashlee Chesny’s “The Adventure’s of the Ruler Twins”. This experience was made possible by the author’s Junior Storyteller Program and the detailed workbook that goes with it. The summer campers worked directly with the 5 time published children’s author and other members of the Genius Patch Team. After completing their story, the Junior Authors presented it to the 1st and 2nd graders for entertainment and as an exercise in peer mentorship.
To celebrate the successes of each class, Genius Patch provided a field day in partnership with Michigan State University’s Residential College of Arts and Humanities (RCAH), Sweet As Honey Ent, TCC Gives, Metro PCS and New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church. The day was filled with fun kinesthetic activities such as relay races, water balloon tosses, and so much more. RCAH provided the children with ample pizza from Little Caesars; Sweet As Honey Ent. provided delicious hand crafted confectionery treats; TCC gives sent a corporate representative with backpacks filled with school supplies; Metro PCS sent more school supplies along with headphones and sunglasses for each child; New Prospect supplied beverages and a venue for the event.
This year was one of Genius Patch’s most amazing programs to date with the largest and most diverse pool of volunteers coming together since its first program in 2015. Genius Patch is filled with gratitude for the support by all of its volunteers, caring community members, donors, partners, and the generous TCC Gives Team for the grant that made the summer camp possible.
To keep the love of learning and literacy going long after camp ended, Genius Patch provided each summer camp participant with an autographed copy of the book their class worked through out summer camp along with a coloring book containing all of Ashlee Chesny’s storybook characters.
